Freeware BitTorrent Clients for Mac OS X

Whether your using BitTorrent protocol to download files online or simply to share between friends and family on your own network, it has definitely become one of the most efficient and preferred methods of sharing files online. For Mac OS X users, there are a plethora of options when it comes to a BitTorrent desktop client that will allow you to download and create torrents. While each app will have similar feature sets, not all are created alike. Below we will take a look at a few of the top freeware BitTorrent clients for Mac OS X.

µTorrent BitTorrent Client for Mac

µTorrent is definitely one of the most popular clients available and touts itself as “the world’s most popular BitTorrent client”. This isn’t for no reason, however, as this client features probably the most robust set of features and is advanced enough for power users yet simply enough for the average Mac user as well. Here are a few of the notable features:
  • Native Cocoa Mac client
  • Lightweight and Fast
  • Multiple simultaneous downloads
  • Protocol encryption
  • Peer-exchange
  • Trackerless support (Mainline DHT)

Azureus / Vuze BitTorrent Client for Mac

Vuze is another extremely popular client that is most popular among those interested in finding, downloading and optimizing HD video for a ton of devices including PC, Mac, iPhone, iPod, Xbox 360, PS3, PSP and TiVo. Some of Vuze’s features that set it aside from other clients include:
  • Find content from across the web with powerful meta-search
  • Discover HD videos on the Vuze HD Network
  • Download quickly and efficiently with intelligent bandwidth, queue and speed management

    Transmission BitTorrent Client for Mac

Transmission, although admittedly much more simplistic than the other popular clients, has remained a favorite among loyal Mac users. The main reason for this is Transmission provides an extremely streamlined, unobtrusive approach to BitTorrent. For those of you that just need a native Mac UI and a quick and easy way to download your torrents, Transmission is more than enough and always in development that wont force yet another media player all-in-one application.

Free Instant Messengers

I have been using chat client programs for many years to communicate over the Internet. It has now become very popular and millions of people use it everyday and some 24-7. If your wondering how can i hack into anyone's web cam without permission, this is not one of those articles. This article details the programs you don't have to hack or ask for permission to view them on cam!

While text messaging via mobile phones remains the standard way of communicating, nowadays people prefer video conferencing because you can actually see and speak to your friends, families or complete strangers! Some instant messaging may be too hard to use or cost too much to use although some are more user friendly. To give you an idea of what to expect, Ive selected the most popular and free programs that I’ve used and those that may suit you better, depending on your specific needs.

Below is a list of all the free and most popular programs that I have used. You will be able to see, hear and talk to anyone in the world at anytime of the day!.

YAHOO – What I like about Yahoo is that it’s totally free and has a vast number of chat rooms encompassing many different topics. It also has excellent web-cam features where you can select small, medium and full screen cam views of as many cams as your PC or screen can handle. Your also able to have as many free email addresses as you want. Yahoo includes file and photo sharing facilities, and you can play games, have your own radio station or make free PC-to-PC calls. Anything goes at Yahoo. There’s no rules. You have to ask for permission to view someones webcam. Yahoo IM FREE DOWNLOAD

YaHeLite is a Yahoo Chat Client. Among others are mychat, Yaheh, Cheetachat,Yahzak and El33chat. If you don't like the main Yahoo interface, the YaHaLite may suit your needs. It’s free, and it will have different features. It has a much more complicated interface, but you will soon find your way around. You’ll soon discover its excellent security and other features that make Yahoo look old school! YaHeLite FREE

PALTALK -- A chat program and instant messaging as well as a very popular chat service with a large community that has millions of users. It has thousands of chat rooms on a vast range of topics geared toward all kinds of interests. You can create your own room. It has advanced video streaming, multi player games and music download facilities. With the free version you can only view other people’s cameras for about 10 seconds, but you’re still able to stream your video continuously for free. To get all the features it will costs about $40 a year. The program itself is relatively small and contains only a few megabytes. I get by fine with the free version. PALTALK .FREE DOWNLOAD. Free Trial! to view all cams!

CAMFROG -- Chat is a nice, free chat service offering cam and audio chats that are hosted independently by the users. This is a place where it’s possible to view 90 percent of the cams available. You will need a web-cam to chat in most rooms and will be kicked out of some rooms if you don’t have a cam or if your face is not on camera. The camera viewing size is small, but you can pay to have larger cams and for the multi-view cam feature. You don't need a web-cam to use cam frog, but you will not be allowed in some of the rooms if you don't have one and it’s unlikely people will want to talk to you. Some rooms have their own rules, which you’ll see before entering. The cam software technology at cam-frog is very high. It offers fast streaming -- much faster than other messengers. Pro user can view up to a 100 cams at once, which costs about $50 that offers many more features, I love this service as it’s always nice to see whom your talking to... Cam frog FREE DOWNLOAD

WINDOWS LIVE M.S.N, W.L.M. is another very popular messaging service, but it does not have any chat rooms anymore. But you can call PC-to-PC free, view friends’ web-cam and conference/video chat, share folders and files, off line messages, the best icons..The feature I like best is that you’re able to remotely access another PC and help a friend with his PC problems. Also, there are other clients available designed for Microsoft windows called Adium for Mac OS X and Trillion. Windows MSN.FREE DOWNLOAD

EYEBALL CHAT -- Offers completely free video chat and messaging as well as text messaging for friends family and strangers. You share video messages, music and photos. It’s easy to use and allows you to simultaneously sign in to your other IM programs to view their status. The ability to video conference with more than one person is not supported, other than that its small, simple chat service. EYEBALL CHAT FREE DOWNLOAD

TRYFAST Messenger is another free chat, but it is not very popular as yet and the number of rooms is very limited, It’s a nice cozy place to hang out, and it has web-cam features. The cams can be full screened or and any size you want, You pay about $6 a month for the full features, which enable you to view many cams simultaneously with their live video streaming. It’s quite good, but the downside is it uses a lot of PC resources for such a small app. It has file transfer features. If you’re not on cam the owners of the room will boot you out, or even bar you, It offers simultaneous chats with users from MSN, AOL, Yahoo and ICQ in the same video chat session. TRYFAST FREE DOWNLOAD

SKYPE – Another good messenger service that allows you free calls PC-to-PC and an instant messaging service. Most features in Skype can be used for free, although you will have to pay for a few. There's useful options to find people with their search facility.Providing the person you are looking for has Skype or email address or name, you will be able to find them easily, You can search for a person’s specific age, sex or locality. Skype also offers free video conferencing and unlimited file sharing size. You can safely, cheaply and conveniently send money to your Skype contacts with its Send Money feature, There is a chat facility where you can join in certain topics or create your own for discussion. SKYPE 100% FREE

Download what you think best or just download them all! Use these programs for their content, features and the features you like! We are all different and require different things. The programs are not all designed for specific persons. Each has its own little niche and style and its pros and cons. Sometimes I have used certain programs because there’s too many issues, such as technical problems I haven’t had time to fix!

Google talk is a chat client that I have not used! No web cam feature.

Pidgin is another great free service so people tell me!

Once you have experienced video chat and conferencing, communicating online will never be the same!

Manage Your Windows Live Account in Google Chrome

Do you need a nice simple way to manage your Windows Live account without maintaining a “permanent tab” throughout the day? Then join us as we take a look at the Pop HotMail extension for Google Chrome.

Pop HotMail in Action
If you are not already signed into your Windows Live account in your browser then you will need to do so when opening the popup window.

As soon as you have signed you will be presented with the default “home page” for Pop HotMail. From here you can navigate to other areas of your account such as your inbox, compose new messages, etc.

Note: At this time Pop HotMail does not display the number of unread e-mails on the “Toolbar Icon”.

The only drawback for the extension may be in viewing some e-mails (depending on how they are formatted). Here you can see one of our e-mails and the “Compose New Message” window.

Enjoy easy access to your “Folders & Contact List”…

You can visit the Mobile version of “Windows Live Home” and view any “Junk Mail” that you may have unfortunately received.

Clicking on the “Go to mail.live.com” link at the bottom of the popup window will open a new tab if you need “full window” access to your account.

Conclusion
The Pop HotMail extension provides a nice simple way to manage your Windows Live account without needing to constantly maintain an open tab for it.

Create an XP Mode for Windows 7 Home Versions & Vista

One of the cool features in Windows 7 is XP Mode. However, it’s only available for Windows 7 Professional and above, leaving Home Edition and Vista users out of luck. Today we’ll show you how to create your own XP Mode to run on Vista or Windows 7 Home Premium.
How does this work?
Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows Vista are not licensed to run the free XP Mode download from Microsoft.  In fact, if you select Home Premium on the XP Mode download site, you will see the following message:
sshot-92
Last week we showed you how VMware Player could help you run XP Mode without hardware virtualization. Even VMware Player doesn’t have a link to import XP Mode if you’re computer is running 7 Home Premium or Vista.
sshot-19
However, if you have a legal copy of Windows XP, then you can easily recreate XP Mode with the free VMware Player.  This article will show you how quick and easy it is to get a virtual copy of XP running on any computer, even if it’s running 7 Home Premium or Windows Vista.
Getting Started
First, download and install VMware Player (link below).  It is a free download, but requires registration.
sshot792
You may see some prompts about installing drivers; simply approve them.  We didn’t see them on our latest test, but have in the past.  When you are finished installing VMware Player, you will have to restart your computer.
sshot-2010-02-16-[19-14-34]
Create your own XP Mode
Once your computer is rebooted, start up VMware Player and insert your Windows XP CD in your CD drive.  In this example we used a copy of Windows XP Professional, but it would work the same with any edition of XP.
In VMware Player, click the link at the top that says “Create a New Virtual Machine.”
sshot-20
VMware automatically detects your Windows XP CD, and says it will install it with Easy install.  This will let you install XP with only 5 clicks!  Click Next to continue.
sshot-21
Now enter your XP product key, and name and password of your choice.  We named it XP Mode to make it obvious what this virtual machine is for!
sshot-22
Here VMware will automatically enter your operating system’s name and the default location to save the files.  Simply press next to accept the defaults, or change them if you wish.
sshot-23
You can choose how large you want your virtual hard drive to be; the default is 40Gb, but you can choose a different size if you wish.  Please note that the entire 40Gb will not be taken up on your hard drive.  Our clean install only took up 1.4Gb on the computer.
sshot-24
That’s all the settings.  You can review and make changes here, or simply press Finish to start installing XP.
sshot-25
From here on, VMware will take over.  You do not need to click anything else until XP is fully installed!  It will automatically run the installer, format the virtual hard drive,
sshot-30
Copies XP files to the hard drive,
sshot-31
And finishes the install.
 sshot-93
Everything will work automatically, so you can literally leave it unattended while it’s installing.  In our tests it took about 20 minutes to install.  When it’s done, you’ll be presented with the Windows XP desktop ready for use!
sshot-37
VMware Player will automatically launch the VMware Tools installer to integrate your virtual XP with your computer.  It may have to download or update the tools, so if you see the yellow banner at the bottom of your window simply click Update Tools or Install Tools depending on you situation.
sshot473
The tools will automatically download and install, though you may have to approve an UAC prompt.
sshot512
Once the tools are downloaded or updated, they should automatically run in XP. If not, click Start, then My Computer, and finally double-click on the CD drive which should say VMware Tools.
sshot-2010-02-16-[20-02-36]
Now, simply run the Tools installer with the Typical setup type, and reboot XP when it’s finished.
sshot673
Now your XP is fully installed and setup, so you can proceed to integrate with your computer just like XP Mode!
Integrate XP Mode in VMware Player with Windows 7 or Vista
The real advantage of the default XP Mode in Windows 7 is that the XP programs are fully integrated with their Windows 7 counterparts.  You can run them seamlessly with other programs, copy between them, and even open and save files to the same folders.
Let’s set this up in VMware.  Copy and paste from Windows 7 or Vista to XP in VMware is activated by default.  To use your XP programs seamlessly with Windows 7, click VM on the top of the VMware window, and click “Enter Unity.”
sshot743
You can easily access any program or file in XP mode through a dedicated XP Mode Start Menu.  When you hover over your Windows 7 Start button, a new button called “Windows XP Mode” will above it.  Click there to access a full start menu from XP Mode right in Windows 7.
sshot783
And it works the exact same in Windows Vista.
sshot-46
Here is an IE 6 window from XP running side-by-side with IE 8 in Windows 7, thanks to VMware Player!
sshot773
And notice, this is guaranteed to work on any edition of Windows 7 or Vista, including Home versions.
sshot-47
By default, the virtualized windows will have a border and the VMware logo on their edge.
sshot-2010-02-16-[20-21-39]
To remove this logo, click VM in the VMware player window, then settings.  Click on the Options tab, and choose Unity on the left.  Now uncheck the boxes that say “Show borders” and “Show badges.”
sshot763
Without having the VMWare borders and badges give everything a more authentic XP Mode look and feel.
sshot-2010-02-16-[20-23-15]
You can even use removable devices, such as flash drives, in XP in VMware Player.  Whenever you connect a new device to your computer, VMware will remind you that you can add it to XP.
sshot822
Simply click VM, then Removable Devices.  Select your device name, and click Connect.
sshot863
Save Files in XP Mode to My Documents in Windows 7 or Vista
By default, files created in XP in VMware Player will be saved inside the virtual machine.  It’s more convenient if they’re saved directly to the My Documents folder in Windows 7 (or the Documents folder in Vista), so let’s change this.  Click VM, then Settings.  Click the Options tab, and then choose Shared Folders on the left.  Now click the bullet for “Always enabled” and check the box for “Map as a network drive in Windows guests.”
sshot853
Now click Add at the bottom of that window.  This will let us add a shared folder.
sshot872
Let’s add the My Documents folder from Windows 7 (or the Documents folder in Vista).  Click Browse, and then select your My Documents folder.  Click Ok, and then click Next.
sshot902
Make sure the box is checked that says “Enable this share” and then click Finish.  You can now close the settings window as well.
sshot912
Back in XP, click Start, then right click on My Documents, and select Properties.
sshot42
Click Move to find the new My Documents folder.
  sshot142
Find the folder we just shared from Windows 7 or Vista by clicking My Computer, then the drive that says “Shared Folders on ‘vmware-host’” or something similar.  Now select the folder we shared, Documents, and click Ok.
sshot152
Click Ok in the main properties window.  It may offer to copy the files from your old My Documents folder to the new one; choose Yes to make sure you have all of your documents in Windows 7.
sshot112
Now, whenever you go to save a file in XP, it will automatically save in your My Documents folder on Windows 7 or Vista, depending on your circumstance.  You can repeat the same process for any folder you wish, such as your My Pictures and My Music folders.
Conclusion
And that’s all there is to it!  You now have a fully functioning copy of XP running right inside your 7 or Vista computer.  Almost everything works the same as XP Mode in 7 Professional or Ultimate.  The only difference is that you used your own copy of XP, but if you have an old copy already then it doesn’t cost you any more than XP Mode would.  And, even if your computer is running Windows 7 Professional, you may find it easier to use a copy of XP you already own instead of importing XP Mode.  VMware Player does a great job at integrating XP with your computer, and in our tests it worked as good or better than the actual XP Mode.
You can actually run Windows Virtual PC on any Windows 7 computer, even ones running Home Premium that aren’t eligible for XP Mode.  You could install XP in it, then install Virtual PC’s integration components, and it will work exactly like the default XP Mode.  However, we’ve found VMware’s solution easier to use and much faster to setup.  If you would like to try this out, download Virtual PC at the link below (be sure to select Professional as your edition of Windows … even though Home Premium is licensed to run Virtual PC and can run it fine, the download isn’t offered by default).
